I love Scandiavian cities as they tend to combine modern design, great food with green areas surrounding them – whether it is Copenhagen, Helsinki or Stockholm. I have only been to Gothenburg twice, but it is a really green, livable city and great for a weekend city trip. In February of 2018, we did a short city trip with the surprise travel company srprs.me. So, here are the best tips for Gothenburg – according to me.

Why you’ll love Gothenburg

Great food, amazingly friendly people and stunning nature within 30 minutes of the city. Gothenburg is a super versatile base for a weekend city trip.

My best omakase experience in Gothenburg

The Japanese habit of omakase (お任せ) when you’re ordering at a restaurant pretty much means, “I’ll leave it up to you”, inviting the chef to be innovative and surprising in the selection of dishes. I try to do it in every city I visit, and apply the idea behind to everything between how I pick my runshow I pick my foodhow I plan activities with my kidshow I explore cities and how I travel in general. So, I tried this in Gothenburg as well.

Our best omakase experience in Gothenburg was at Dubbel Dubbel, an Asian restaurant, where we had some amazing Asian food, including the best dumplings I had in a long while.

  • One of the things I like most about Gothenburg is the fact that less than 30 minutes outside of the city, you will have some beautiful quiet pieces of nature. We loved visiting Vrångö, the southernmost island of the Gothenburg archipelago. We got there via tram and a small ferry boat.
  • There are quite some nice furniture stores in Gothenburg, of which we liked Artilleriet very much.
  • Liseberg theme park is nice for both kids and adults, but make sure it’s open when you’re in Gothenburg (they close during winter).
