Wow. Thanks #Greenland for an amazing two weeks. It was a hell of a job to get there, but what an amazing place to be. Being waved off by whales was the perfect ending to a week in the wilderness of the #arcticcircletrail , trips to #russellglacier #reindeerglacier #point660 and finally #Ilulissat ssaticefjord
Sorry, couldn’t help myself. They’re just so awesomely amazing. #iceberg #ilulissat #ilulissaticeberg #visitgreenland
Besides questions about my morning make up routine (joking people, just joking), I’m getting quite some questions about the #arcticcircletrail - would I recommend it? Well ...
I was lucky enough to spend some time all over the world, but hardly ever have I been so fascinated by the amazing sight of big chunks of ice. The last days I spent pretty much every minute I could observing the light, shadows, movement of icebergs. Mornings, afternoons and -as here/ evenings. How every moment of the day is different, how clouds are different, how passing boats make the icebergs wiggle. Feeling blessed to be able to experience this. #ilulissat #visitgreenland #ilulissaticeberg
Fell in love with an iceberg yesterday ❤️
Here’s to the #arcticcircletrail huts, the trail’s super powered community hubs. Most hikers actually do not sleep in the huts. Yes, they provide shelter from wind, rain, snow, cold, sun and these pesky August flies that have an habit of crawling into your ears and nose for whatever reason. Yes, they accommodate 6+ people comfortably. Yes they have a kitchen. But when it comes to sleeping, few things beat camping on your own in the remote wilderness at a serene lake, stream or hillside.
Water is a truly incredible magical fantastic thing on earth. If you don’t throw your waste in it, sh*t/pee in it and or dump other dubious materials in it, you can actually drink it, just like water from your tap at home. Fresh water in nature is just like the filtered tap water at home without the need of being filtered - how friggin’ awesome is that huh?!? It sounds so obvious but it took me spending close to a week in the #Greenland wilderness on the #arcticcircletrail to overcome the reflex that you can’t just drink water from a stream or lake. Here you can. Just being able to stop pretty much every kilometer to get some cool fresh water is just such an amazing feeling. #visitgreenland
Arguably the most photogenic loo in the world. Suddenly, it just is. No nearby settlement (approx 15kms from #Sisimiut), no ski elevator, no house. Just a loo. Although the view is amazing (you can go all out and open the back panel of the loo to have an unobstructed view), on the #arcticcircletrail there are plenty of loo-views you do not need to open a back panel for (but please do make a hole in the ground and cover your sh*t up). #loolingo #talkingshit
Just arrived back at the #Kangerlussuaq airport after 6 days on the #arcticcircletrail (#Sisimiut > K for the experts). What an amazing serene experience. On the photo is actually my worst camping spot all week, an I-am-giving-it-up-the-heat-mosquitos-and-swampy-stretches-won-so-I-will-just-lay-down-here-thank-you-shelter named after, well ... you get it I guess. Will be posting some updated in the next few days, for the moment just closing my eyes to relive every single bit of these amazing days.
Finally. Finally. Finally here. #Kangerlussuaq airport in #greenland Close to a year of preparation, months of going/not going because of that COVID thingy that is happening and weeks of struggles and uncertainty to get the right testing, permits and clearance to go. For the next two weeks I will be off the grid, hiking the #arcticcircletrail from #sisimiut to #kangerlussuaq A dream come true. Thanks @marie_ke , Ella and Gust for allowing me to go and not being too annoyed by all my gear lying around our house and me reading every single book there was to read about Greenland (and talking about it non stop). Thanks @visitgreenland @filipgielda @hiker_huw @irissteigemann @bimmbammbommerlunder @narsaq87 and all the others for helping me out and keeping my fire alive. See you all on the other side!
T minus 7 days. With the current European heat wave, it is tempting to dream about ice and polar temperatures. I’ve been dreaming about it for over 9 months now. Just one more week and I’ll be on my way on the #arcticcircletrail for 166km through the #Greenland wilderness. Much to dream about, so much to plan for. More than a week in the wilderness ... Icy river crossings ... Mosquitoes ... Polar bears. There is a non-zero-chance of encountering a polar bear. There’s a well-known rhyme in North America about bears “bear brown, lay down / bear black, fight back / bear white, good night”. Which makes this little snippet of a story full circle I guess.
“There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing” (and a bad mood?), so we made the best out of our rainy summer holidays in The Netherlands. We turned our holiday home in a drawing and LEGO academy, the local beach in an Ibiza-style bay and the local restaurants ... well they were already pretty awesome. Thanks Eric, Roland, @martijnvrij , Karlijn, Nino, Saskia, Marije, Marieke, Renee, Danielle and all the others at @hofvansaksen for an amazing week. #hofvansaksen
