For a conference, I spent a couple of days in Nicosia – pretty much Istanbul meets Athens meets Marrakech meets Amman. So here are the best tips for Nicosia – according to me.

Why you’ll love Nicosia

Nicosia’s looks and vibes made my think of Athens and Istanbul, while being quieter. A city with a rich history, amazing food and a connection with the rest of the island with amazing beaches and resorts.

My best omakase experience in Nicosia

The Japanese habit of omakase (お任せ) when you’re ordering at a restaurant pretty much means, “I’ll leave it up to you”, inviting the chef to be innovative and surprising in the selection of dishes. I try to do it in every city I visit, and apply the idea behind to everything between how I pick my runshow I pick my foodhow I plan activities with my kidshow I explore cities and how I travel in general.

I had a really nice Souvlaki in Nicosia’s city center.

Nicosia border crossing

  • Cross the border. It was a weird experience to cross the border in the middle of the city between the Turkish and ‘Greek’ part of the city. Strange, weird, reminding of old Berlin.

  • The Hilton Nicosia is a fine hotel with a great rooftop pool which is great to have a dive and chill on hot days.

I went out for a run at the Alsos Forest, which seemed to be the greenest area nearby. As it was end of summer when I was there, there was not too much green or forest, but still it was a green lung in the middle of the city.
