It was the night before my Kumano Kodo hike when I was looking for food in a quiet fishing village in Japan, Tanabe. It was off-season so most of the city was closed. My ryokan host had told me there should be one restaurant open in town, but the owners would only speak Japanese. This is how I had one of the best meals in my life in an unlikely place.
